The Little Raindrop’s Adventure

Little Ray was a raindrop who lived happily in a soft, fluffy cloud. Life was good for Ray but he knew that his first ‘fall’ was coming. His father had told him many great stories about the falls that he’d had and the adventures that had followed, but Ray was still nervous.

His father explained that every raindrop is part of the water cycle.

“When we fall to Earth, we help plants grow, fill rivers, and give animals water to drink,” he said.

“But how will I find my way back to the cloud?” asked Ray.

“Don’t worry,” his father replied, “with the help of the sun, you’ll come right back and before you know it, it will be time to fall again.”

Before he could think too much about it, the sky darkened, and their cloud began to rumble. “It’s time!” said Ray’s father.

Ray took a deep breath and leaped from the cloud.

As he tumbled down, Ray felt the wind rush past and he saw the ground getting closer. He could see trees, rivers, and the animals looking up at the rain. His fear began to turn to excitement.

With a gentle splash, Ray landed in a quiet forest. He soaked into the soil, meeting tiny worms and thirsty roots. Then, he travelled through the ground and found himself in a little stream. He tumbled over rocks, shot down waterfalls and twisted down to the bottom of the valley.

“Wahoooo,” shouted Ray, “This is so much fun!”

By the time he reached the river, Ray was exhausted.

“Where are we going?” asked Ray.

“Towards the sea,” shouted another raindrop with glee.

After some time relaxing in the river’s flow, Ray felt himself getting lighter and warmer. The sun was shining down, and Ray began to float, up and up, and up.

“I’m evaporating!” he realised as he rose gently back up into the sky.

Back in the cloud, the other raindrops welcomed him with a cheer. Ray couldn’t wait to share his adventure with them. He felt brave and proud, knowing he was part of something much bigger.

“I hope I get to swim in the sea next time,” he told his father.

Ray was no longer afraid. He understood that every time he returned to Earth, he’d be helping the world, then coming back up to the clouds to start all over again.

Smiling, Ray looked forward to his next adventure.

The Teacher’s Pet

The children chatted excitedly on the carpet of their classroom. It was their first day back after the summer holiday. Miss Hepburn was giving each child two minutes to tell the rest of the class about one thing they did over the holiday. Some students had brought in pictures, others had objects to show, and some even had a video that they wanted to play.

Miss Hepburn was working her way down the register. It was almost Lacey’s turn. She was getting more and more nervous and fidgety.

“Lacey, it is your turn now,” Miss Hepburn said softly.

Lacey stood up. She felt her cheeks go red as she looked at everyone staring back at her. She wanted to speak, but couldn’t. What if everyone just laughs at me? she thought to herself. What if no one finds what I have to say interesting and doesn’t ask any questions? She looked over at Miss Hepburn who gave her a kind smile and a little nod.

Lacey took a deep breath and began. “I took my neighbour’s dog, Archie, for a walk every day and played with him in the garden.” The children were silent. Lacey looked at Miss Hepburn and then back at the other children.

“Did you want to show the video?” asked Miss Hepburn. Lacey nodded and was glad that the children’s eyes were now on the screen and not on her. Lacey’s video showed all the tricks that she had taught Archie over the summer.

After the video, hands started shooting up in the air. It seemed everyone in the class had a question that they were desperate to ask.

“Can Archie catch a ball, Lacey?” asked Milo.

“What is Archie’s favourite treat?” asked Anis.

“Can I take Archie for a walk with you during the next holiday?” asked Ciara.

Lacey felt very happy and relieved.

Just as she was about to sit down, Miss Hepburn had a quiet word in her ear. “Archie loves spending time with you. Thank you for taking such great care of him. Would you like to take him for another walk at the weekend?”

Lacey’s cheeks started to glow. “Yes please, Sally, I mean Miss Hepburn,” she whispered back. “I would love that.”
